All my life I have loved bears, and have always longed for traditional mohair jointed bear of my very own. As at the time I didn't know where to get one, I thought I would make one myself.
Having always been keen on crafts of all sorts; painting, sewing, miniatures, glass painting, etc., I was yearning for something more fulfilling, so I bought a cheap kit from a craft shop. The end result was ghastly, but I knew that, with practice, this would be something I would grow to love.
I knew nothing of bear making except my crude attempts at the cheap craft shop kit. I discovered a Teddy Bear magazine almost by accident one day in the newsagents, and a whole new world opened up before me. And what a world that was! I have had nothing but friendly help and encouragement from the bear-making fraternity. In fact most of my contact with bear artists is via the Internet and at specialist fairs.
I make bears out of the finest quality mohair, glass eyes, hardboard cotter-pin joints and ultra suede paw-pads. Most of my bears' features are accentuated with hand-painted details and the odd simple accessory. I prefer to leave my bears 'in the fur', so that their beautiful mohair is not hidden from view. I have tried to capture the look of my Cocker Spaniel Smiffy. She looks up at me with those big soulful eyes, and I just melt! I hope my bears do the same for you!
